Balkan tour in 10 days

Albania and Montenegro are neighbouring countries on the shores of the Adriatic sea. The countries share the sea, Shkodra lake – the largest lake in the Balkans and the mountains which both have plenty of. This tour will take you to their most spectacular natural sites without forgetting your interest in their history, traditions and people as part of the experience of a savvy traveller. This theme is carried over into Kosovo the newest state in Europe, where we combine religious monuments with tasting local delecious foods

Day 1: Tirana – Durres
Meet at the airport and transfer to Durres , the one of the oldest towns in Albania and the biggest port. Visit the remains of the ancient amphitheatre thought to hold 20 000 people making it the largest in the Balkans. Day 2: Durres – Vlore – Sarande
After breakfast depart to Saranda through the spectacular Albanian Riviera with its traditional villages. At the Llogara National Park we stop at around 1100 metres where spectacular views of the Ionian Sea can be admired. Afterwards continue along the wonderful coast to the ancient city of Butrint another UNESCO World Heritage considered the best archaeological site in Albania and probably one of the most important in the Balkans.  It is situated on a beautiful peninsula among dense vegetation.  After a through visit of the site return to Saranda for overnight. http://www.hotelagimi.com or similar.

Day 3: Saranda – Ksamil – Blue Eye – Gjirokastra (UNESCO) – Berat (UNESCO)

After breakfast depart to Gjirokastra a museum town under the protection of UNESCO as a World Heritage Site with beautiful and very distinct architecture. On the way we will stop at the beautiful Blue Eye spring shaped like an eye with beautiful blue and turquoise green colors among old maple trees. Afterwards drive to Gjirokastra where we will visit the fortress of Gjirokastra, part of which was turned into a political prison for dissidents of the regime,The Arms Museum,  also every year there is token the Albanian folkloric festival . After lunch in a  traditional restaurant  continue  to Berat. Overnight in Berat the old district of Mangalem . www.mangalemihotel.com or similar.

Day 4: Berat – Kruje – Shkoder

Berat, one of the most visited and characteristic towns in Albania under the protection of UNESCO as a patronage of humanity for its architectural uniqueness. We visit the Castle and the Onufri Museum. Berat castle is of particular interest as people still live within its walls in their traditional houses, as have their ancestors for centuries. Just below the castle we visit the Leaden Mosque, the King’s Mosque, the Bachelor’s Mosque and the Alveti Tekke completing a tour of this town’s religious tolerance. After the tour depart to Kruje, the centre of Albanian resistance against the Ottomans under our National Hero Scanderbeg. Day 5: Shkoder –  Valbona – Peja

Shkodra the most important town of north Albania and the Illyrian capital, in the 3rd century BC. Visit Rozafa Castle from where spectacular views all around can be admired.  We will also visit the Marubi Photographic Museum etc. Take a walk in the newly renovated pedestrian area of Italian and Austrian architecture, testimony to this town historic links with both these countries. Depart to Koman where we take the ferry and enjoy a spectacular beauty of Albania on the way to Valbona. Day 6: Peje –Rozhaje – Herceg Novi

After breakfast a long drive through magnificent natural beauty of the North West Kosovo and Montenegro takes us to Kolašin which is Montenegro’s most famous ski resort, than to its capital Podgorica. We will take a driven tour of the capital and continue on another panoramic drive Cetinje a town of immense historical heritage, founded in the 15th century. Day 7: Herceg Novi  – Budva – Kotor – Hercegnovi

This is an intensive day of visits rich in nature culture and heritage of Montenegro. First the Old City of Kotor, a UNESCO site built between the 12th and 14th century in the wonderful bay with the same name.  Afterwards we take a spectacular mountain drive to Njeguški a village best known as the birthplace of the Petrović dynasty, which ruled Montenegro from 1696 to 1918. Day 8: Herceg Novi – Tirana

After breakfast depart to Tirana. On the way we stop to Ulcinj. Ulcinj is the tourism borne. The longest beach at the Adriatic sea – Velika Plaza that is 13 km long, the Ada Bojana – a unique river island with marvelous sandy beaches. After the visit continue to capital Tirana. Day 9:   Tirana

After breakfast visit at the National Museum of History which is a great introduction to the history of the country and its people. Afterwards take a driven tour of the major sites of Tirana, the lake, including the colourful buildings for which the Albanian capital is now known,  shapes. Lunch at Dajti mountain. After lunch shopping time at biggest shopping centers . Day 10 Tirana-Airport
After breakfast transfer to Airport.
